Chemotherapy Treatment

Chemotherapy is treatment of cancer using drugs that kill cancer cells by interfering with their multiplication. It is available mostly as an intravenous formulation (drip). Some drugs also have oral preparations which are equally effective and convenient.

Chemotherapy means the delivery of drugs/medicines used for systemic cancer treatment. It’s often shortened to “chemo.” Two other medical terms used to describe cancer chemotherapy are antineoplastic (meaning anti-cancer) therapy and cytotoxic (cell-killing) therapy. Chemotherapy differs from surgery or radiation in that it’s almost always used as a systemic treatment. This means the drugs travel throughout the body to reach cancer cells wherever they are.

Chemotherapy is used to treat many cancers. More than 100 chemotherapy drugs are used today — either alone or in combination with other drugs or treatments. As research continues, more drugs are expected to become available. These drugs vary widely in their chemical composition, how they are taken, their usefulness in treating specific forms of cancer, and their side effects.
Chemotherapy is prescribed by the centre’s Oncologist and administered by Oncology Nurses usually intravenously and on an ambulatory basis after careful preparation by our in house Pharmacist.

Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy is often used to treat patients with cancer. In contrast to chemotherapy it is a local treatment only and is used to treat disease that is localised to a specific area. Radiation therapy is delivered using photons which are 'packet of energy'. This energy is deposited in cells and causes the cells to die. Radiation kills both normal and cancer cells but normal cells are better able to recover than cancer cells and therefore there is a therapeutic advantage. Radiation therapy is normally delivered over a protracted period of time to allow the normal cells to recover.

Delivering the dose in small doses or fractions allows us to give a higher dose without causing severe side effects or long term damage. This higher dose is often effective in eliminating all the cancer cells leading to remission or cure. Modern radiation treatment techniques are design to spare normal tissue wherever possible whilst delivering a high tumor dose to the prescribed area.

It may also be used palliatively, to relieve symptoms in patients with incurable cancers. A radiation oncologist may also use radiation to treat some benign diseases and benign tumors.
